Welcome to Rustic Fare!

Why Rustic Fare?

Because my cooking is rustic especially when making bread, pockets and pizzas.

When I started this blog, I was a vegetarian. My vegetarian journey started around twenty eight years ago. The first thing I learned was making whole wheat bread... a rustic bread!

That whole wheat bread was unusual for people around me. There were lots of bakeries where I lived but bread and all the like were made of white flour.

At that time, I haven't seen a homemade bread like this before. It was a new bread for me as well, dark, heavy and nutritious! It is simple to make using only three ingredients: whole wheat flour, water and yeast.

Over the years, I learned how to make it even more nutritious adding wheat bran, oat bran and flaxseed.

My first intent when I made a small one:

Flaxseed bread

This is This is similar to the regular whole wheat bread with more fiber using oat bran and a load of natural omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseed ground added to it.

I used golden flaxseed this time:

The original recipe is called Oat Bran Broom Bread meaning that cleans your digestive system.

Even when bread has some additions, I always make it whole. This is a whole-wheat cheddar and chives bread.

This bread is from my vegetarian times. Little by little I changed my lifestyle from vegetarian to vegan so I now can substitute real cheese for vegan cheese.

And spinach bread:

These are spinach-feta cheese pockets from my vegetarian time. I now use homemade vegan cheese.

Dishes in this blog are very simple. They are from when I started to cook more. Little by little, I tried making some other dishes from different cuisines.

Also, becoming vegan made do some modifications to this blog adding more dishes and veganizing some.

I used to eat cheese, drink milk and use eggs in my baking. It's amazing how vegan lifestyle can be healthy and delicious at the same time!
